Increasingly, PROFIBUS is also used in critical applications. There is always a risk that functions demanded cannot be met. This risk can be reduced with targeted measures. At the forefront of this will be the following two objectives:

1.Ensuring functional safety

The system should fail safe in case of error.

2.Increasing availability

If a fault occurs, the system should still be able to deliver the required function, even if it is at a reduced level.

These two aims can impede or even complement each other.
