A tool must be used for error diagnosis. Most bus monitors can also display and count transmission errors. Below is a screenshot from a ProfiTrace tool that has registered parity errors generated by faulty bus terminations:

This tool also carries statistical counters for all stations. If two consecutive telegrams appear with the same FCB it indicates a retry.

In a correct installation no telegram retries should be necessary.
